For 150 years, a little red car served as the punctuation mark at the end of almost every freight train in America. Both office and home to the train's conductor and brakeman, the caboose housed the men responsible for the safety and management of the train. Along the way, the cupola-topped cars became a beloved American icon, as much a part of the national landscape as the covered wagon and Mississippi River boat once were. But like them, its time has passed. THE CABOOSE examines the changes that have made these rolling offices obsolete, and takes an up-close look at many of the preserved cabooses across the nation, some turned to inventive new roles now that they are no longer needed on the rails.
